Wind turbines are as well as, not instead of the power stations

Birkin Church Open day
The Birkin Church Open day on 3 September 2011 was a great success !

A record number of visitors and a record sum raised for the church.

Nigel Adams MP took the full tour of the church and later referred to the Church in a House of Commons debate on tourism in Yorkshire.      See link below.

The balloon flown over the church at turbine height really brought the message home to visitors about the height of the proposed turbines.

The balloon could be seen from Gateforth over the top of the wood. It was also visible from Hillam, Burton Salmon, Poole, Kellington, Beal , West Haddlesey  and Sutton. It provided the clearest indication yet about how high the turbines might be and how visible they would be in the open rural landscape.

10.00am Launch of helium balloon to turbine height of 125 metres / 405 feet

About St Mary’s Church

St Mary’s Church, which serves the people of Birkin and Beal, was built around 1140.  Although we have no record of the skilled and noble people who built it, we can admire their handiwork for its wonder and beauty. Once inside, you can examine the apsidal, East end, with its rounded groin roof-work illustrating just why this building is such a national treasure. There are other outstanding features, including the font, South doorway, pulpit and stained glass windows. The Church gives the impression that time has stood still for all the years of its existence. Part of the appeal is that its location has escaped the attention of the tourists, historians and archaeologists. It is a secret local gem and an important part of our local heritage.
