Damage to Quality of Life and the Rural Environment
“The U.K. government's thesis that the countryside of Britain is 'worth sacrificing
to save the planet' is an insult to science, economics and politics. But the greatest
insult is to aesthetics. The trouble is that aesthetics has no way of answering back”.
Simon Jenkins, The Times
The wind turbines are extra. Ferrybridge, Eggborough and Drax will still be needed.
Together they produce 8000 times the power of a wind turbine.
- People living in the country usually do so out of choice - many prefer to live in
a rural environment so they can make use of their surroundings for leisure purposes.
Its a way of life.
- Others visit the countryside at weekends and after work for recreational activity.
- The proposal would have a detrimental effect on many of these leisure activities.
- The area is rich in wildlife and is on a major bird migration route - wildlife will
be negatively affected.
- The only people to benefit will be the landowners. No additional local jobs will
be created. The area will see a net loss. Power generated and CO2 saved will be minimal
compared with other schemes near to Selby.
